First trailer for CASA DE MI PADRE, I guess

Jan 14 2012 Published by under Film

Here’s what they’re calling the first trailer for Will Ferrell’s upcoming comedy Casa de mi Padre.  To be honest, a lot of this was in the video that came out months ago, which I thought was the trailer.

This film has been super high on my most anticipated list since I learnt about it.

Top 10 films of 2011: #8 – EVERYTHING MUST GO

Dec 30 2011 Published by under Film

I remember being excited about Everything Must Go before I left for NYC in June this year because I liked the idea of Will Ferrell once again playing a more understated character.  I thought he was really good in Stranger Than Fiction, and was looking forward to him once again delivering a more low key comedic performance.

You can probably imagine by delight when I stumbled upon the Brooklyn Heights Cinema on Henry Street and discovered they were playing Everything Must Go.  I came back later that afternoon and headed into their small, but air conditioned, theater to watch the film.

The film tells the story of Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell), a guy who loses his job due to a drinking problem and subsequently has his wife leave him.  Nick decides to hold a yard sale to sell all his belongings in an attempt to start over and have some sort of catharsis.

It’s kind of hard to put into words why I like Everything Must Go so much.  There aren’t any real laugh out loud moments, Nick doesn’t reconcile with his wife, and he doesn’t find a new love interest.  The film is pretty simple actually, but it has a feel to it that all good films do.  Something you can’t really quantify or explain, but something that leaves you feeling uplifted and comforted.

I recognise that some of my fondness for Everything Must Go is almost certainly because I saw it whilst on vacation in NYC, arguably my favourite place in the entire world, but the film is well made and actually quite impressive to look at.  My memory of the film is that a good deal of it is shot in the magic hour, so it’s no wonder there are a bunch of beautiful shots.

On the actor/actress side of things, the film also stars Rebecca Hall and Michael Peña, and they both do as good a job as you would expect.  Christopher Jordan Wallace plays the kid who helps out Ferrell’s character and he also gives a good performance.

I will say that the trailer makes the film look a lot lighter than it actually is.  That’s not to say it’s especially dark or brooding, but it’s not as light and fluffy as you might be led to believe.

365 Day Unseen Movie Marathon – Day 7 – MEGAMIND (2010)

Jan 07 2011 Published by under Film

Title: Megamind

Directed by: Tom McGrath

Written by: Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons

Current Flickchart position:  #418 of 1322 overall.  My #33 film, of 51, from the year 2010.

What It’s About:
The supervillain Megamind (Will Ferrell) finally conquers his nemesis, the hero Metro Man (Brad Pitt)… but finds his life pointless without a hero to fight.

General Comments:
Dreamworks has skated by on the Shrek name for far too long, especially when you consider just how shit all the Shrek movies are.  Thankfully Megamind is nothing like the terrible pop culture regurgitating animated films which everyone except Pixar make.  It’s a fun, sweet and funny movie featuring some outstanding voice work by Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross (fuck yeah) and Brad Pitt.  It goes without saying that it’s nowhere near as good as Pixar’s work, but for a Dreamworks film it’s surprisingly good.

Both Will Ferrell and Tina Fey absolutely nail it.

Rating:  6.5/10

LAND OF THE LOST review

You know what, when I first saw the trailers for Land of the Lost I didn’t get it.  I’d never seen the TV show and I figured the movie was just a shitty vehicle for Will Ferrell and that they’d skimped on the effects as a way to cut the budget.  I still haven’t seen the TV show but after watching the film I think I have a good understanding of why it is like it is.

The film tells the story of Dr Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) who’s the laughing stock of the scientific community because of his outlandish theory of time travel and alternate dimensions.  Three years after a meltdown on early morning TV he is approached by Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel) about finishing his research and a couple of days later she convinces him to take it out on field trip.  That field trip takes place at a run down “cave” attraction operated by Will Stanton (Danny McBride).  Marshall turns on his device and they’re sucked into another time/dimension.  Whilst in this new world they encounter an intelligent T-Rex, a monkey man called Cha-Ka (Jorma Taccone) and the lizard-like Sleestaks, all whilst trying to recover Marshall’s device so that they can get home.  Hilarity or mediocrity ensues, depending on your sensibilities.

I really enjoyed this film for what it is, a riff on a goofy Saturday morning TV show from the 1970′s and a vehicle for Will Ferrell and Danny McBride to do their thing and Anna Friel to look smoking hot in those short shorts.  The special effects are terrible on purpose so as to mock the quality of the TV show the film adapts and to provide another humourous element, and this is something I didn’t really get when I first saw the trailers to the film.  I had just about zero knowledge of the TV show and this film was only on my radar because of Will Ferrell’s and Danny McBride’s involvement.  The trailers made it out to be an adventure flick with some comedy thrown in and it looked terrible.  A better way to approach the film is as a straight comedy with the barest bit of adventure added.  Also the barest bit of a plot too as the story is paper-thin at best.

Ultimately I think anyone’s enjoyment of this film will come down to how much they like Will Ferrell and Danny McBride.  If like me you think that neither can do any wrong then you’ll almost certainly enjoy this film, however if you’re one of the people who are tired of either guys schtick then you’ll probably want to pass on this one as they stick to their routine pretty tightly.  I love what both guys do in just about everything the make so needless to say I enjoyed this flick.  Plus there’s the added bonus of Anna Friel in those tiny shorts and white singlet talking in her natural English accent.

Final Grade: C

Conclusion
Yeah, Will Ferrell and Danny McBride play the same character in just about everything they do, but I like that.  It’s not a knockout final grade but it’s not a knockout movie either.  Watch it for Ferrell, McBride and Friel and not for any semblance of a story.  Know this going in and you should enjoy it.

THE GOODS: LIVE HARD, SELL HARD red band trailer

May 29 2009 Published by under Film

Now this one looks awesome.

Starring a shit-ton of great comedic actors including Jeremy Piven, Will Ferrell, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong, David Koechner, Kathryn Hahn, and Tony Hale, the film tells the story of a used-car liquidator (Piven) who is hired by a flailing auto dealership to turn their Fourth of July sale into a majorly profitable event.

It’s set to open on 14th August.

International trailer for LAND OF THE LOST

May 28 2009 Published by under Film

Here’s the international trailer for Will Ferrell’s upcoming comedy adventure flick, Land of the Lost.  Despite having a bunch of people in it who I really enjoy watching, I just can’t seem to get excited about it.  It looks cheesy in an unintentional way, and that doesn’t bode well for the film.

It opens on 5th June.
