My impressions from the early draft script of Toy Story 3.

This is my first attempt at reviewing a script on my new blog, but I’m not even going to pretend to be good at analysing a script. What I’m going to do instead is give general impressions of the scripts I read with some broad reasons why I like or dislike it.

So, the script I have for TOY STORY 3 is an early draft which has apparently been discarded for a completely new story. I think with the standards that Pixar has set for itself with it’s catalogue of films, that this is actually a good thing. That’s not to say that the story isn’t any good, I just don’t think it matches up to the level of quality that we all expect from a Pixar flick.

The basic plot is that Andy is having his room redecorated, so some of the toys are left at home (in another room I presume), and a group of the more popular ones are taken with Andy while he stays the night at his grandmothers spooky house. The story then takes on a murder/mystery vibe, with each toy disappearing one by one under the belief that Andy will only have room in his new room for two toys. Jealousy and distrust play a big part in the story, along with the introduction of two sock monkeys, Hee-Hee and Gladiola.

Pros:

The opening train scene

The flirtation between Jessie and Buzz

“The Deadly Death House of Death”

Let’s Get Physical recurring gag

“I shrank in the dryer”

Cons:

The almost constant element of jealousy

Buzz losing his head

The Star Wars compactor gag (it felt like a pop culture reference you’d see in a Shrek film)

The whole garbage truck/farm truck sequence (it felt too similar to other scenes in the previous films)

Final Grade: C-
