Top 10 films of 2011: #6 – 50/50

OK, first thing’s first, I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He’s by far my favourite actor. I mean it isn’t even close. Second, Seth Rogen is perhaps my second favourite comedic actor behind Will Ferrell. With that in mind it’s pretty clear that I was always going to like 50/50. You add in the cute and wonderful Anna Kendrick, plus Bryce Dallas Howard playing a mean-spirited bitch, and it all adds up to a wonderful film.

The film tells the story of Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who’s diagnosed with cancer, how he attempts to cope with this diagnosis, and his struggle to overcome the disease with the help of his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and his trainee therapist (Anna Kendrick).

It was pretty much a given that Gordon-Levitt and Kendrick would give good performances, Angelica Huston was good too as the overemotional and annoying mother that Adam just wanted to avoid, but I was impressed by Seth Rogen. He hasn’t played that many semi-serious roles so far in his career, except in Observe and Report and Funny People, but it’s always a treat when he does. He has the ability to be funny and serious at the same time, if that makes sense, and in 50/50 that ability is put to good use because he comes across like a best friend would do in that situation. Trying to lighten up his friend and make him feel like it’s not all bad. I also loved how Kyle fired into Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) after he caught her out and told Adam.

It was also pretty cool to have Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer in the film.

Ultimately, I think the film did a wonderful job showing what someone might go through if they were diagnosed with cancer. The world doesn’t end, they still have friends, they still have family, they still laugh, and there are people in their lives who will try and make it OK.

And spoiler alert, I absolutely loved loved loved the ending because I truly didn’t think that Adam and Katherine would end up together just because of the whole doctor/patient relationship thing.

Here’s another trailer for the upcoming drama/comedy 50/50 starring my absolute favourite actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which is currently #10 on my most anticipated movies list.

There’s some new footage in here but I think overall I prefer the first trailer. That one still has comedic bits, but it doesn’t shy away from the inherent drama in the story.

Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, and Bryce Dallas Howard also star. The film is due for release on September 30th.

I definitely prefer the original title of I’m With Cancer, but when a film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt I’ll see it no matter what the name is.

50/50 stars Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Angelica Huston and Phillip Baker Hall. It’s due for release on 30th September 2011.

The new trailer for PAUL is an improvement

The international trailer for Paul came out a while back and whilst it was great to see some actual footage, I wasn’t very impressed by the trailer. Well a new trailer has arrived and I’m much happier with the way it’s cut.

I absolutely loved the script for Paul when I read it and I’m really hoping that it’s another success for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. I guess I’ll find out in February.

FUNNY PEOPLE not doing well

Nikki Finke, the acid tongued queen of Hollywood news and gossip, has a report pending which says that Funny People, Judd Apatow’s latest, has opened to only $8 million on Friday and a $22 million weekend.

I have a hard time understanding why the movie would do so poorly considering it’s getting pretty great reviews (63% on Rotten Tomatoes), has a fantastic cast (Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, and a great director in Judd Apatow. The only thing I can figure is that people are put off by the cancer storyline and the 2 hr 20 mins runtime.

Box office disappointment or not, I’m still dying to see it, so they’re at least guaranteed my $14.

Seth Rogen to voice PAUL

Variety is reporting that Seth Rogen will be providing the voice for the alien Paul in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s upcoming comedy Paul.

Personally I thought of Bill Hader as the voice when I read the script, but more Seth Rogen is never a bad thing.

Also added to the cast are Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jane Lynch and Jason Bateman.

2 new TV spots for FUNNY PEOPLE

Here are two new TV spots for the upcoming Judd Apatow comedy, Funny People.

The film tells the story of comedian George Simmons (Adam Sandler) who when he learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, develops a desire to form a genuine friendship, which leads him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act. The film is written and directed by Judd Apatow, and stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Leslie Mann, Jason Schwartzman, Aziz Ansari, Ken Jeong, and a whole bunch of comedians playing themselves.

It’s set to open on 31st July.
