365 Day Unseen Movie Marathon – Day 60 – LET ME IN (2010)

Title: Let Me In

Directed by: Matt Reeves

Written by: Matt Reeves and John Ajvide Lindqvist (novel and screenplay Lat den ratte komma in)

Initial Flickchart position: #195 of 1374 overall. My #10 film, of 71, from the year 2010.

What It’s About:
A bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.

General Comments:
I still consider it to be a completely unnecessary remake, but seen as how it’s an almost scene for scene copy, is in English, and stars probably my favourite up and coming actress in Chloe Moretz, I think that it’s a damn good film. I find all remakes to be pointless exercises because they’re never any better than the original and really amount to a cash grab by the studios. Still, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Moretz gave really good performances, and I was pleasantly surprised that they kept Abby as a boy, although from memory they don’t seem to have delved as deep into that aspect as they did in the original Lat den ratte komma in.

Watch Let Me In because it’s a surprisingly good remake starring the fantastically awesome Chloe Moretz.

Rating: 8/10

At least Matt Reeves' name isn't on this LET ME IN poster

Despite the pretty decent trailer for Let Me In which came out the other day I’m still not convinced that it’s a worthwhile remake or that it’ll be any good. And I’m a HUGE fan of Chloe Moretz. It’s just been such a short time since the original Swedish film came out, and it was so damn good, that I can’t see the point in remaking it. Are audiences so lazy and narrow-minded that they won’t watch a film with subtitles? I’m starting to think that’s the case what with this remake and the upcoming remake of the amazing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. God Hollywood sickens me sometimes. Come up with something original why don’t you.

Anyway, here’s that latest poster for Let Me In and it’s the first one to not feature Matt Reeves’ name or the fact that he directed Cloverfield in massive type. Just a nice subtle image. I love the bare foot footprints.

KARATE KID makes $18.8M, no end in sight for remakes

I’m disappointed. Disappointed and angry. The Karate Kid made $18.8 million on Friday in the US with a weekend estimate of over $50 million now predicted.

I was really hoping that both The Karate Kid and The A-Team would bomb this weekend and it would give Hollywood pause to think about the whole remake business model they’ve been using. Unfortunately, all the hillbilly retards that Hollywood generally caters to went to see The Karate Kid this weekend which means that Hollywood will continue riding the remake train and update/reboot more of my childhood favourites for no good reason. And why wouldn’t they? If all the morons in society gladly spend their money on remakes the studios will be happy to not have to take chances on original films.

Quickly off the top of my head they’ve already remade Halloween, Friday 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Karate Kid, all of which are favourites of mine. But there’s also a whole host of remakes at various stages of development, including:

Fright Night
Overboard
Akira
American Pie
Arthur
Drop Dead Fred
Escape From New York
Flash Gordon
Fletch
Flight of the Navigator
Highlander
Let The Right One In
Sunset Boulevard

I’m all for remaking a film if the original is shit, but none of the films I’ve mentioned are. Except for Overboard. What’s the point of remaking a film when the original is good? It’s a cash grab by studios who are unable or unwilling to develop original projects and the trend is fueled by audiences who are willing to accept remakes. At some point the studios are going to run out of films they can remake and then they’ll be forced to develop original stuff. Why can’t they do that now and save all of us from having limited options when we go to see a movie.

I want new films in the cinema. If I want to watch Halloween I’ll watch the 1978 original. If I want to watch The Karate Kid I’ll watch the original with the awesome Ralph Macchio. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with these films or any of the other ones which are getting the remake treatment. The only way this remake trend will come to an end in the foreseeable future is if audiences don’t go and see them. Hollywood responds to the bottom line. If a certain type of film doesn’t make money then that type of film won’t get made any more.

I urge anyone and everyone to boycott remakes and see something original instead. Go see Winter’s Bone.

Here are the three new posters for The CW’s reboot of Melrose Place.

I never watched the original and I think I’m a little too old (31), a little too male, and a little to straight to be watching this when it airs in September.

I’m still hugely disappointed that this is being made, but when a studio starts to think that something’s a good idea they stick to that line of thinking. Remaking a John Carpenter film isn’t a good idea, especially Halloween, and that will be proven for the second time when Halloween II is released on 28th August.

Anyway, here’s the Canadian poster for Rob Zombie’s hack attempt at remaking a horror classic.

I’ve said it before, but I hated Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween. In my opinion the original is just about the perfect horror movie and there was no reason whatsoever for it to be remade. I was hoping that the relative failure of his first attempt would mean that a follow-up would not come about, but unfortunately he was given the go ahead.

Maybe as it drifts further away from the original story it will be better, ‘cos I’m having a hard time believing it could be any worse than his first attempt.

H2 (Halloween 2) TV spot

I’m still horrified by the terrible remake of Halloween that Rob Zombie did a year or two ago. How on Earth could anyone think that remaking a horror classic like Halloween would be a good thing. Needless to say I’m pretty damn annoyed that he got to have a shot at the sequel too.

Here’s a new TV spot for H2 anyway as I’m sure there are some out there who enjoyed his first attempt and want more of the same. Me, I’ll stick to the brilliant original. That theme still terrifies me to my core.
