First poster for THE RUM DIARY

Sep 08 2011 Published by under Film

It’s great to have Johnny Depp back in a Hunter S. Thompson tale.

I do find it a little weird that they’ve only just released a poster for The Rum Diary and it’s due for release on October 28th.

My PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES “review”

Aug 20 2011 Published by under Film, Reviews

Written by: Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott and Tim Powers (novel)
Directed by: Rob Marshall
Genre: Action, adventure

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz) are after it too.

I love the first three Pirate of the Caribbean films.  Love them.  Especially the last two.  I know critics say they’re bloated films with a mess of a plot, but I don’t care.  There is such massive scope to them that I can’t help but be drawn in.  Even with the annoyingly whiny Orlando Bloom.

What became instantly apparent when I was watching On Stranger Tides is that there simply isn’t that sense of epic scale.  It’s a very small film.  There aren’t any breathtaking special effects ala Davey Jones or the Kraken, there aren’t any massive battles like the end of At World’s End, hell there aren’t any decent fights.  There’s one shitty fight between Jack and Angelica that’s reminscent of the fight between Jack and Will in Curse of the Black Pearl, and there’s an anti-climactic fight between Barbossa and Black Beard at the end.  So very dull.  How they spent the budget of $250 million on this I don’t know.  I get the feeling that $200 million went to Johnny Depp and the remainder was split between the rest of the cast, special effects and promotion, ‘cos none of it looks like it went up on the screen.

The absolute only worthwhile thing about On Stranger Tides is Ian McShane as Black Beard.  Don’t get me wrong, the character of Black Beard wasn’t that interesting but I did enjoy seeing McShane give a little bit of an Al Swearengen performance.

On Stranger Tides looks and feels like something an amateur would write as fan fiction.  Unlike Scream 4, On Stranger Tides is a completely unnecessary and undeserving entry in the franchise.

RATING: 5/10

CONCLUSION
Ian McShane is in it, Orlando Bloom isn’t, and it’s another chance to see Captain Jack Sparrow.  Those are the only good things about Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

An awesome trailer for WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE

Feb 19 2010 Published by under Film

OMG, this looks insanely fantastic.  I’m a huge fan of The Doors so a documentary covering from the time of their formation to Morrison’s death and narrated by Johnny Depp is probably gonna end up being one of my all time favourite documentaries.

I hope and pray I get a chance to see this VERY soon.

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS trailer

Oct 08 2009 Published by under Film

Wow.  This one looks like a complete mindfuck but in the best way possible.  I have no idea what it’s really about but to say it looks impressive is a massive understatement.  From the looks of things it seems like Heath Ledger went out with two amazing performances.

I can’t wait to see Parnassus when it opens here in Oz on October 29th.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND character images

Jun 22 2009 Published by under Film

Wow, I guess I should of expected this from Tim Burton, but it’s kinda jarring nonetheless.  AICN is right when they say:

Holy Jesus!  Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND is going to scare the crap out of women, children, men and animal alike!

Take a gander at these character images of The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), The Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), and The White Queen (Anne Hathaway).

PUBLIC ENEMIES poster variants

May 15 2009 Published by under Film

I stumbled across these four poster variants for the new Johnny Depp film, Public Enemies, and thought I’d put them up here.  Sorry for the misalignment of the thumbnails, I think it’s just a problem with Lightbox, but they will display properly when enlarged.

I’m not sure how new they are so some of you guys may have seen them before, regardless of that it’s still nice to have them all in one place.  They definitely seem to fit the mood of the film very well.

Public Enemies opens on 1st July.

Who’s gonna play SINATRA

May 15 2009 Published by under Film

johnny_depp1_300_400Nikki Finke is reporting that whilst Martin Scorsese may want Leonardo DiCaprio to fill the title role of Frank Sinatra, Universal is so thrilled with Johnny Depp’s performance in the upcoming Public Enemies that they want him as the lead.

I really enjoy both of these actors in just about everything they do, but I think in this case that Johnny Depp would be the better choice.
