365 Day Unseen Movie Marathon – Day 43 – 127 HOURS (2010)

Feb 12 2011 Published by under Film

Title: 127 Hours

Directed by: Danny Boyle

Written by: Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy and Aron Ralston (novel)

Current Flickchart position:  #257 of 1357 overall.  My #16 film, of 64, from the year 2010 (although both of these rankings seem too low).

What It’s About:
A mountain climber (James Franco) becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.

General Comments:
It’s not as great as I had hoped but James Franco is breathtakingly brilliant as Aron Ralston.  A couple of years ago I never would of thought the stoner from Freaks and Geeks could be this good of an actor.  I’m hoping and praying that Franco wins the Oscar this year.  It would be truly deserved.  As always, Danny Boyle’s direction is fantastic, just like everything he’s done to date.  127 Hours just makes me more excited to see what both Franco and Boyle will do next.

Watch 127 Hours because James Franco is a fucking revelation.  Three quarters of the film is Franco with a camera a foot from his face, and he’s captivating the whole time.

Rating:  7.5/10

TRUE GRIT and 127 HOURS look amazing

Oct 12 2010 Published by under Film

So I just got my bandwidth reset for the next month after having maxed it out about 3 weeks ago.  The first thing I did was have a look at some trailers that came out while I had my connection shaped to dial-up speed.  Of the bunch of trailers I watched True Grit and 127 Hours really stood out.  Holy crap do they look like impressive films.

I already knew I was gonna see 127 Hours because of Danny Boyle and the pretty damn great James Franco.  But I didn’t really know what to expect of the film.  I think the trailer does a good job of conveying the tone of the film.  My feeling is that it’s kinda like Into The Wild, which is a good thing because Into The Wild is one of my top 10 films ever.

True Grit on the other hand is a definite surprise.  I’m not a fan of the Coen brothers at all, and I’d even go so far as to say that they’re vastly overrated.  That being said, True Grit really does look amazing.  Chalk that up to Jeff Bridges, and to a lesser extent Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

Anyway, check out the trailers for both True Grit and 127 Hours below.

DATE NIGHT trailer

Nov 12 2009 Published by under Film

Well this not what I expected at all.  I’ve been looking forward to seeing something from Tina Fey and Steve Carell’s Date Night for a while now but I figured it’d just be a funny almost R rated comedy.  The trailer makes it seem like a romcom combined with Mr and Mrs Smith.  I’m still excited about it but in a whole different way.

I also loved the little bit of James Franco and Mila Kunis that was shown.  God I love those two.

Natalie Portman cast in YOUR HIGHNESS

May 30 2009 Published by under Film

Natalie PortmanYes.

Natalie Portman, one of my favourite actresses has been cast in the upcoming comedy Your Highness to star alongside Danny McBride and James Franco.

The film tells the story of an arrogant lazy prince (McBride) who with his brother (Franco) must complete a quest to save the kingdom and his brother’s fiance.  Portman will play a warrior princess that the lazy prince falls in love with.

I was already super excited about this because it was written by Danny McBride and Ben Best and is to be directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express), but with Portman’s involvement it’s vaulted right to the top of my must see list.  I can’t wait.
