365 Day Unseen Movie Marathon – Day 39 – CATFISH (2010)

Feb 08 2011 Published by under Film

Title: Catfish

Directed by: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman

Current Flickchart position:  #332 of 1353 overall.  My #33 film, of 63, from the year 2010.

What It’s About:
Filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost document a story involving Ariel’s brother, Nev, a 24-year-old New York-based photographer, and Abby, from rural Michigan who contacts Nev via Facebook, asking for permission to make a painting from one of his photographs.

General Comments:
I have no idea if this is actually a true story like the trailer says it is, but Catfish is a genuinely enjoyable, entertaining and thrilling story that really has you on the edge of your seat when the three guys decide to go visit Megan.

Watch Catfish to see a very good documentary (perhaps) about online relationships and how reality can be shaped.  Very well done.

365 Day Unseen Movie Marathon – Day 19 – FREAKONOMICS (2010)

Jan 19 2011 Published by under Film

Title: Freakonomics

Directed by: Heidi Ewing, Alex Gibney, Seth Gordon, Rachel Grady, Eugene Jarecki and Morgan Spurlock

Written by: Peter Bull & Alex Gibney, Jeremy Chilnick & Morgan Spurlock, Eugene Jarecki, Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady, Seth Gordon, and Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner

Current Flickchart position:  #529 of 1334 overall.  My #38 film, of 55, from the year 2010.

What It’s About:
Some of the world’s most innovative documentary filmmakers will explore the hidden side of everything.

General Comments:
My first degree is in social science so that area holds some appeal for me.  That being said, Freakonomics is a pretty fun and interesting social science and economics based documentary that I think most people would find at least mildly entertaining and informative.  Some of the segments are more appealing and thought-provoking than others, but the film is enjoyable enough.

Watch this film for the segments on naming your children and the role of incentives in society.

An awesome trailer for WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE

Feb 19 2010 Published by under Film

OMG, this looks insanely fantastic.  I’m a huge fan of The Doors so a documentary covering from the time of their formation to Morrison’s death and narrated by Johnny Depp is probably gonna end up being one of my all time favourite documentaries.

I hope and pray I get a chance to see this VERY soon.

Oh my God this looks so fucking awesome.

Courting Condi follows Devin Ratray (best known as Buzz from Home Alone) a besotted admirer of Condoleezza Rice, as he prepares to meet her.  It’s described as a musical-docu-tragi-comedy.

It’s due for release on 31st August.

Trailer for SEX ART

Jul 10 2009 Published by under Film

Now this is a documentary which looks far more compelling than anything Michael Moore puts together.

Sex Art is a documentary about artistic representations of sex in contemporary America.  The film catalogues the work of various artists, from photographers and painters to burlesque dancers and porn directors.  Sex Art offers a look at the personalities and artistic ideologies behind the art on the wall.

It’s set to open on 12th August.

Title for Michael Moore’s latest revealed

Jul 09 2009 Published by under Film

For those of you who do check out my blog I apologise for the distinct lack of updates over the past 5-6 days.  I’ve been feeling like absolute crap and have been sleeping for 10-14 hours per day.  Thankfully I figured out what the problem is.  Caffeine withdrawals.  What a lame “illess”.  Needless to say I’m back on the coffee at my regular rate of consumption and I’m feeling much better for it.  With that said, onto the news.

Michael Moore has announced the title for his next upcoming documentary to be Capitalism: A Love Story.

I’ve enjoyed all the Moore documentaries I’ve seen but I generally find his work to be far too one-sided and often quite simplistic.  I’ll certainly see this latest documentary when it’s released on 2nd October if for no other reason than to hear him explain how capitalism is supposedly a bad thing.

IT MIGHT GET LOUD premiere

It Might Get Loud had it’s Los Angeles premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival today and a bunch of cool people turned up including JJ Abrams, Elisabeth Shue, Jack White, and Jimmy Page.

The documentary looks at electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: the Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and Jack White (The White Stripes).

The involvement of these three really makes this something I’m interested in.  I think that Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band we’ve ever seen, and The White Stripes and U2 are both bands which continue to shape the musical environment.  I hadn’t even heard of this project before but thinking about it I’m pretty excited to see it.

Teaser for Michael Moore’s next

Jun 13 2009 Published by under Film

Love him or hate him, everyone has an opinion on Michael Moore.  I really enjoy his ultra-leftist approach to politics, sometimes because I agree with him and sometimes simply for comedic value.

Here’s the teaser for Moore’s unnamed documentary which will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore described as “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

Personally, I thought this teaser was terrible.
