Trailer for The CW’s ARROW HollywoodHubbub

I saw this poster for Robert Rodriguez’s much anticipated sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, on Den of Geek the other day but their source was a weird Russian site so I was unsure if it was an official poster or a fan mockup.  Collider have now posted it, together with one for Machete Kills so I guess it’s legit.

I’ve never read any of the Sin City comics but wikipedia says Dwight, Marv and Manute all feature in Frank Miller’s A Dame to Kill For so I’d expect that Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, and Michael Clarke Duncan would return for the sequel.

First poster for SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR HollywoodHubbub

Two new poster for The Amazing Spider-Man have been released and they continue with the moody look of the others.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).  Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today.  Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets.

As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner.  As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

I’m still not sure how I feel about this film because even though they’re trying to sell the audience that it’s not a reboot/remake, everything I’ve seen so far certainly points in that direction.

I don’t see how another origin story can help this franchise even if they’re trying to introduce Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man and Emma Stone as a better Gwen Stacy.  Still, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least interested in how Garfield does because whilst I thought Tobey McGuire was good when I saw the original, I began to dislike him more and more as the franchise went along.  Also, after watching The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus I think Garfield will do well with Spider-Man’s quippy dialogue much better than McGuire did.

I guess we’ll all know how the film turned out one way or the other come July 3rd.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN continues with the moody posters HollywoodHubbub

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) fights for a place on a top secret research project run by Colonel Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and Dr Erskine (Stanley Tucci) that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals.

I should start by saying that whilst I’m not American I do love America.  I grew up in England and now live in Australia but ever since I first visited the US in 1984 I’ve felt a love for the country that simply isn’t there for my native land.  I’ve been back seven more times since then and long for the chance to move to the US on a permanent basis.  All this is a kinda gooey, hokey way to say that I’m not one of these people who dislike America for it’s storybook ideals and “we’re number 1″ attitude.

The most disappointing thing about Captain America: The First Avenger is that it’s going to be (or already is) number 1 at the box office not because it’s a particularly good film, but because it plays to that phony rah rah attitude of American superiority.  I know America is awesome, I don’t need to be hit over the head with nostalgic patriotism.

As for the film as a whole, I found that the first act was my favourite section of the film because we actually got to spend some time with the characters, whereas Joe Johnston sped through the story in the later acts just so he could get to the next action sequence.  I know it’s a delicate balance when it comes to the pacing of a film, you don’t want to skip ahead too quickly or linger too long, but with Captain America I feel that the whole campaign against Hydra begun, proceeded and concluded far to quickly.  Yeah, he’s Captain America, but that doesn’t mean he can’t encounter some kind of obstacle or setback.  We all know he’s gonna win in the end, the hero always does, but the protagonist needs to face an obstacle.  That’s screenwriting 101.

On the actor side of things I think Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving and Tommy Lee Jones did a decent job, but Haley Atwell as the sexy 1940s pinup-like  officer was a real negative for the film.  I realise they can’t cast some skinny blonde bombshell but my complaint isn’t entirely based on Atwell’s looks.  I think she gave a somewhat OK performance with the material she was given, but that whole romance between her and Captain America was completely manufactured.  There was nothing natural or organic about their relationship, and the “meet in one week” conversation as his plane was going down was laughable.  I’m very hopeful given the way the film ended that Atwell won’t be returning in any form in either The Avengers or the likely sequel.

And speaking of how the film ended, I hope they explain how a guy can be buried in ice in the Antarctic(?) for 70 years and neither age or die.  That seems ludicrous even for a comic movie.

RATING:  6/10

CONCLUSION
I think Captain America: The First Avenger works best as an origin story which sets up Joss Whedon’s upcoming The Avengers.  The first act is decent but the rest feels rushed and paced far too quickly.  Chris Evans is a credible Steve Rogers and Hugo Weaving once again does a good job as a villain.  The special effects are OK and the film is passable.  I wasn’t expecting to be blown away and Captain America: The First Avenger met those expectations.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER review HollywoodHubbub

I really really really don’t want to watch another origin story, especially considering that the first Spider-Man film only came out in 2002.

That being said, I am a fan of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, so this reboot does have something going for it.  Plus it’s never really a bad thing when you can get a new Spider-Man film.

Here’s the non-bootleg teaser for The Amazing Spider-Man.  Due for release on July 3rd 2012 in spectacular 3D.

Here we go again, the teaser for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN HollywoodHubbub

I watched the first episode of the first season of The Walking Dead and never came back to it.  Having read the first two or three trade paperbacks of the comic when they came out, I felt that the show wasn’t doing a very good job of conveying the feel of the books.  I know that’s not a particularly fair judgment to make based on one episode, but I tend to think that a pilot should hook from the beginning and make you want to come back.  That didn’t happen with The Walking Dead.  It is also didn’t help that the comic is so damn good.

This is the main reason I’m totally bummed out that Powers is gonna be made into a TV show.  It’s my single most favourite comic ever and I can’t see it working as a TV show at all.

Anyway, all that said, here’s the new poster for the upcoming second season of The Walking Dead.

Here’s the first poster for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Dark Knight Rises.  I really like it as it gives off both a Batman and Inception vibe.

And to think that it’s only one year until I get to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a Batman film.  Hooray.

That first trailer for Green Lantern was so unbelievably shit that I’d sworn the film off completely, but the extended trailer from Wondercon restored my faith and excitement straight away.

Anyway, here’s the new(ish) poster for Green Lantern.  I’m gonna be in NYC when it comes out so I’ll do my part to make it #1 at the boxoffice opening weekend.

(Kinda) new poster for GREEN LANTERN HollywoodHubbub

What It’s About:
Following the death of his father, Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), heir to his father’s large company, teams up with his late dad’s assistant Kato (Jay Chou) to become a masked crime fighting team.

General Comments:
It’s about as average as I’d expected it to be but I was very surprised how good Christoph Waltz was, even after seeing him in Inglourious Basterds.  I also really liked the cameo from Edward Furlong, a guy I’m gonna love until the day I die.  Cameron Diaz was terrible, just like she is in 90% of her movies.

Watch The Green Hornet to see Christoph Waltz deliver another great performance, and to see Seth Rogen as a dickish action hero.

The four characters posters for Kick-Ass that came out were cool, especially when they’re all lined up together, but I like this one too.  It shows some of the grit which I hope makes the transition from the comic to the film.
