Title: Cutthroat Island

Directed by: Renny Harlin

Written by: Michael Frost Beckner & James Gorman and Bruce A. Evans & Raynold Gideon and Robert King & Marc Norman

Current Flickchart position:  #669 of 1327 overall.  My #24 film, of 55, from the year 1995.

What It’s About:
A female pirate (Geena Davis) and her companion (Matthew Modine) race against their rivals to find a hidden island that contains a fabulous treasure.

General Comments:
I wouldn’t say Cutthroat Island is good, I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but I would say that it doesn’t deserve to be considered the biggest flop in movie history or tagged as the film that bankrupted Carolco Pictures.  Cutthroat Island had a total budget of approximately $115 million and had a global box office of just $10 million equating to a loss of $105 million.  This was enough to bankrupt Carolco Pictures, the studio who were responsible for films like First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III, Red Heat, Total Recall, L.A. Story, The Doors, Terminator 2, Basic Instinct, Cliffhanger, and Showgirls.

There really isn’t a great deal to enjoy about Cutthroat Island with everything being thoroughly forgettable.  I will say that Matthew Modine was fucking terrible, and Geena Davis, an actress I really liked in Beetlejuice, The Long Kiss Goodnight and A League of Their Own, was less than impressive.

Watch the film for the novelty value and to see a movie which had the power to bankrupt a movie studio.  Oh, and a hint, when a film has this many writers it’s almost always shit.

Rating:  5/10

Poster for PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME

Jul 22 2009 Published by under Film

Here’s the new poster for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

You know, it’s been so long since this film was first announced that I’ve almost completely lost interest in it.  When I first heard about it I was pretty excited as I thought it was gonna be another possible franchise in the mold of Pirates of the Caribbean.  But fast forward 3 or 4 years and all we have is a couple of stills, some shitty footage from Entertainment Weekly or some such show, and this poster.  I’m sure when I see an actual trailer that my interest will pick up again, but until then I’m not impressed in the slightest.

Teaser trailer for PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF

Jul 15 2009 Published by under Film

Here’s the teaser trailer for the upcoming adaptation of the first Percy Jackson novel.

I tried reading the book and gave up a couple of chapters into it.  It’s certainly a children’s book, but unlike the Harry Potter series of novels I really don’t think it’s written to be read by adults.  The writing style just screams children’s book.

That being said I’m a little curious to see the film because I generally enjoy the work of Chris Columbus.

Here are five new posters for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince each focusing on the different kids.

I’m really looking forward to the film as I thought it was the best of the books by far.  It’s set to open on July 15th.

International trailer for LAND OF THE LOST

May 28 2009 Published by under Film

Here’s the international trailer for Will Ferrell’s upcoming comedy adventure flick, Land of the Lost.  Despite having a bunch of people in it who I really enjoy watching, I just can’t seem to get excited about it.  It looks cheesy in an unintentional way, and that doesn’t bode well for the film.

It opens on 5th June.
